Questionnaire

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback! This feedback will be used to improve Damast, to extend Damast to new fields of research and data sets, and in scientific publications regarding Damast. Providing feedback is completely optional, and your feedback would only be published in anonymized form. You can leave this page at any time if you change your mind. Once you click on the submit button in the bottom right of the page, your feedback will be sent to the server.

General Feedback

Would you recommend Damast to your colleagues and peers?
How intuitive and useable do you think the interface of Damast is?
Give more detailed feedback on various features (optional).

Expertise and Field of Research

How familiar are you with this research domain and this type of dataset?
How familiar are you with interactive data visualization?

Visualization Feedback

Please provide feedback for the individual views and features of the visualization. Each view and feature is briefly presented and explained. If you had not previously explored or used the feature, you may specify so.

Map and List of Places

The map (left) and list of places (right) show the geographical context of religious groups. They show which religious groups existed in which cities, and both allow to filter and search for place names.

How difficult to use do you consider the map and list of places to be?
How important is the map and list of places for your tasks and research questions?
How much time did you approximately spend using the map and list of places?

Timeline

The timeline shows the presence of religious groups at different times. Each religious group is represented as a row, which is colored if we have evidence of that religious group at that time. The timeline can also be used to filter data by time.

Religion hierarchy

The religion hierarchy shows the different religious groups. The groups are shown hierarchically under their respective main religion. Checkboxes behind each religious group can be used to filter the dataset for specific religious groups.

Confidence view

The data shown in Damast is rated with different aspects of confidence; for example, how confident we are in the geographical placement of a historical settlement; how confident we are in the veracity of a historical source; or how confident we are regarding the religious group mentioned in said source. The confidence view summarizes the data by aspect and level of confidence, and allows to filter the data accordingly.

Highlighting

The different parts of the visualization are coordinated. Clicking on any element of the visualization will highlight the represented data everywhere in the visualization. For instance (see video right), clicking on a religious group in the religion hierarchy highlights places in the map with that religious group. Clicking on a symbol in the map, in turn, highlights the religious groups represented in those places in the religion hierarchy.

Filtering

The coordinated views also allow to filter the data by different aspects. The filters affect the data everywhere in the visualization. For instance (see video), selecting a time span in the timeline sets a filter there. In turn, the map, as well as other views, also only show data from that time span.

Tooltips

The visualization also shows tooltips, small popups with additional information about the data under the mouse cursor. These appear when placing the mouse cursor over any part of the visualization where there is data.

Three tooltip examples are shown from the map, the timeline, and the list of places.

How important is the tooltips for your tasks and research questions?

Reports and interlinked pages

Damast offers the possibility to generate a report from the currently shown data in the visualization. These reports are permanent, can be linked to, and even downloaded in a PDF format that can be attached to publications. The reports also contain a link back to the visualization, which will open the visualization with the same filters and data that were used to create the report. Damast also provides links between its different pages; for instance, it is possible to go from each entry in the list of places in the visualization to a page describing that place in more detail.

Confidence mode uses one selected aspect of confidence to color the views.

How difficult to use do you consider the linking between pages and reports to be?

Did you use the links?

Confidence mode

The data shown in Damast is rated with different aspects of confidence. In confidence mode, an aspect of confidence is used to color the visualization, instead of the religious groups.
